Habitat
Temperate forest, plantations, arable land. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Gibraltar (to UK) (B) (NB), Italy (B) (NB), Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Spain (B) (NB), Tunisia, Western Sahara (B).

Introduced to Portugal (E) (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Previously placed in superspecies with Chukar (Alectoris chukar), Philby's Partridge (Alectoris philbyi) and Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa). Now considered to be more distant from the reconstituted superspecies of Przevalski's Partridge (Alectoris magna), Rock Partridge (Alectoris graeca), Chukar (Alectoris chukar) and Philby's Partridge (Alectoris philbyi).

Proposed subspecies theresae and duprezi included respectively in barbara and spatzi.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • barbara (Reichenow, 1896)   -  Libya and north-western Egypt.
  • koenigi (Reichenow, 1899)   -  North-western Morocco.
  • barbata (Reichenow, 1896)   -  Northern Morocco and northern Algeria; Sardinia (possibly introduced).
  • spatzi (Reichenow, 1895)   -  Southern Morocco, central Algeria and southern Tunisia.
