Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been placed in Coerebidae or Parulidae or even, because of an apparent close relationship to Acanthidops, in Emberizidae. Molecular phylogenies indicate that it is most closely related to Xenodacnis and to Acanthidops, Haplospiza and Catamenia (the last three genera currently placed in Emberizidae), and that all clearly belong in present family. Members of this clade may also be closely related to the Oreomanes / Conirostrum clade. Subspecies georgebarrowcloughi differs little from hitchcocki and perhaps better subsumed within latter but is retained pending further study.

Proposed subspecies parui (described from Cerro Parú, in north-central Amazonas) considered inseparable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • duidae Chapman, 1929   -  Isolated tepuis in Amazonas (including Cerro Parú, Cerro Huachamacari, Mt Duida and Cerro Marahuaca) and south-western Bolívar (Meseta de Jaua and Cerro Sarisariñama), in southern Venezuela.
  • hitchcocki Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1948   -  Cerro Sipapo, Cerro Guanay and Cerro Yavi (northern Amazonas), in southern Venezuela.
  • georgebarrowcloughi Dickerman, 1987   -  Cerro de la Neblina, on southern Venezuela-Brazil border.
