Subspecies
Birds from Venezuela proposed as a separate subspecies, venezuelana, but validity of this requires confirmation.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
gigas (Bonaparte, 1851) - Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá, and Andes of southern Táchira) and adjacent eastern Andes of Colombia (south to Cundinamarca).
cucullata (Jardine & Selby, 1842) - Western and central Andes of Colombia south to Ecuador.
cyanonota von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896 - Andes of northern and central Peru (Amazonas south to Junín).
saturata von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1906 - Andes of south-eastern Peru (Cuzco and Puno).
montana (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Andes of northern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and western Santa Cruz).
