Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From 600 - 3,500 m.
Belize, El Salvador (B), Guatemala (B), Mexico.
Unknown to Honduras.
Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Scientific name formerly Myadestes obscurus, but that became preoccupied when Phaeornis merged with present genus.
Proposed subspecies cinereus (from north-western Mexico) synonymized with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- occidentalis Stejneger, 1882 - Western and east-central Mexico.
- insularis Stejneger, 1882 - Tres Marias Is, off western Mexico.
- oberholseri Dickey & van Rossem, 1925 - Central and southern Mexico south to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
