Subspecies
Genus as presently constituted is probably polyphyletic, and in need of further study. Syringeal characters suggest that present species, as well as White-tailed Tyrannulet (Mecocerculus poecilocercus) and Buff-banded Tyrannulet (Mecocerculus hellmayri), are possibly close to Camptostoma, Inezia and relatives. Subspecies taeniopterus intergrades with nominate in Peru (eastern La Libertad).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
albocaudatus Phelps & Gilliard, 1941 - Andes of western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida, Táchira).
stictopterus (Sclater, 1858) - Andes of Colombia, Ecuador (both slopes) and northern Peru (Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas).
taeniopterus Cabanis, 1874 - Eastern Andes of Peru (southern from eastern La Libertad) south to northern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
