Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through illegal logging and land conversion, pressure from an increasing human population, are the main threats.

Subspecies
No very close relationships apparent. Has been linked by some authors with Pallid Honeyguide (Indicator meliphilus), and in past with Least Honeyguide (Indicator exilis).
