Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Somali Short-toed Lark (Alaudala somalica) and Lesser Short-toed Lark (Alaudala rufescens) and has been treated as a subspecies of Lesser Short-toed Lark (Alaudala rufescens), but differs in morphology, song and habitat choice. Named subspecies vauriei, known only from type locality in north-eastern India (Palasbari, in Assam), synonymized with nominate. Subspecies adamsi intergrades with nominate in northern India (Haryana).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
adamsi (Hume, 1871) - South-eastern Iran, Pakistan and north-western India (Punjab, Haryana, north-western Gujarat).
raytal (Blyth, 1844) - Northern India (eastern from Haryana to Arunachal Pradesh), Nepal, Bangladesh and central and southern Myanmar.
