Inland wetlands. From sea-level - 2,150 m.
Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B) (NB), Maldives (B), Myanmar, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam.
Vagrant to Seychelles.
Unknown to Kuwait (E).
Northern Persian Gulf east through Indian Subcontinent and Sri Lanka to Burma; also Laccadives and Maldives, Andamans and Nicobars.
 
Population
Estimated population is 100,000 - 1,000,000 (2010).

Forms superspecies with Chinese Pond-heron (Ardeola bacchus ), Javan Pond-heron (Ardeola speciosa ) and perhaps Madagascar Pond-heron (Ardeola idae ).
