Habitat
Breeds by water-meadows and lakes in lowland valleys, both in open and partly wooded areas. Winters on lowland rivers, lakes, flooded meadows, and, less frequently, coastal lagoons and estuaries.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), India, Japan, Laos, Mongolia (B), Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Russia (Asian), Russia (Central Asian) (B), South Korea, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Afghanistan, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Iran [Islamic Republic of] (E), Iraq (NB), Jordan, Kazakhstan, Malta, Netherlands Antilles, Northern Mariana Islands, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Turkey, USA.

South-eastern Siberia and Mongolia to Kuril Is and northern Japan.
 
Population
Estimated population is 89,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Hunting for food is the main threat.

Habits
Usually in pairs or small parties. Large flocks formed outside the breeding season, often mixed with other dabbling ducks (particularly Eurasian Wigeon (Mareca penelope) and Northern Pintail (Anas acuta)).

Voice
At breeding grounds, male has a short, low whistle, followed by a wavering 'uit-trr'. Female has a hoarse 'quack'.
