Lowlands of south-eastern Colombia (from western Caquetá and Vaupés) south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and Bolivia (western Santa Cruz), east to southern Venezuela (Amazonas and western half of Bolívar) and western Brazil (east to approximately R Negro, south-central and west-central Pará and northern half of Mato Grosso).

Subspecies
This genus and Cyanerpes were previously regarded as members of a separate family, Coerebidae, but later placed in present family on basis of similarities in skull anatomy; molecular phylogenies indicate that the two genera are sisters and form a monophyletic group with Tersina.
