Voice
Similar to that of Red-capped Lark (Calandrella cinerea) - a sparrow-like 'tchweerp', uttered in flight. Song is a sustained jumble of melodious phrases, given during display flight. Will also mimic other birds' songs.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Somali Short-toed Lark (Alaudala somalica), Athi Short-toed Lark (Calandrella athensis) and Erlanger's Lark (Calandrella erlangeri) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Calandrella somalica following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
May form a superspecies with Greater Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), Red-capped Lark (Calandrella cinerea), Blanford's Lark (Calandrella blanfordi) and Hume's Lark (Calandrella acutirostris). Sometimes considered conspecific with Greater Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), Red-capped Lark (Calandrella cinerea) and Blanford's Lark (Calandrella blanfordi).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Blanford's Lark (Calandrella blanfordi).
