Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Melaenornis, but majority of authors regard separation as justified, particularly on ecological and behavioural grounds. Forms a species group with White-browed Forest-flycatcher (Fraseria cinerascens). They overlap geographically, but differ significantly in habits and voice.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
kelsalli Bannerman, 1922 - Extreme south-western Guinea and southern Sierra Leone.
prosphora Oberholser, 1899 - Liberia, central and southern Ivory Coast and southern Ghana.
ocreata (Strickland, 1844) - Central and southern Nigeria, Bioko I (Fernando Póo) and southern Cameroon east to western Uganda, south to extreme northern Angola and central DRCongo.
