Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Greenish Schiffornis (Schiffornis virescens). Subspecies probably constitute more than one species, but critical studies not yet undertaken.

The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • veraepacis (Sclater & Salvin, 1860)   -  Caribbean slope from south-eastern Mexico south to Nicaragua, and both slopes in Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Mourner (Schiffornis veraepacis).
  • dumicola (Bangs, 1903)   -  Western and central Panama. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Northern Mourner (Schiffornis veraepacis).
  • panamensis Hellmayr, 1929   -  Lowlands of central and eastern Panama and north-western Colombia (northern Chocó, western Córdoba). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Russet-winged Mourner (Schiffornis stenorhyncha).
  • acrolophites Wetmore, 1972   -  Extreme eastern Panama (Cerro Tacarcuna) and adjacent highland areas of north-western Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Northern Mourner (Schiffornis veraepacis).
  • rosenbergi (Hartert, 1898)   -  Pacific slope from western Colombia south to extreme north-western Peru (Tumbes). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Northern Mourner (Schiffornis veraepacis).
  • stenorhyncha (P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1869)   -  Northern and north-eastern Colombia and northern Venezuela (Zulia east to Aragua). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Russet-winged Mourner (Schiffornis stenorhyncha).
  • olivacea (Ridgway, 1906)   -  South-eastern Venezuela and Guyana. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Olivaceous Mourner (Schiffornis olivacea).
  • aenea J. T. Zimmer, 1936   -  Eastern slope of eastern Andes in Ecuador and adjacent northern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Foothill Mourner (Schiffornis aenea).
  • amazonum (Sclater, PL, 1861)   -  Lowlands from extreme eastern Colombia and southern Venezuela south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and north-western and western Brazil (east to R Negro and north-western Mato Grosso).
  • wallacii (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1867)   -  Surinam, French Guiana and eastern Amazonian Brazil (lower R Negro east to Amapá and, south of Amazon, from R Tapajós and lower R Teles Pires east to Maranhío).
  • steinbachi Todd, 1928   -  South-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia.
  • intermedia Pinto, 1954   -  Eastern Brazil (Paraí­ba, Pernambuco, Alagoas).
  • turdina (Wied, 1831)   -  South-eastern Brazil (southern Bahia south to Espí­rito Santo).
