Habitat
Upper understorey and lower canopy of forests, scrubs, swamps, and wooded ravines. From sea-level - 570 m.
Costa Rica (B) (NB).
Cocos Island off the coast of Costa Rica.

Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Habitat destruction through grazing feral deer, pigs and goats and predation by rats and cats are the main threats.

Insects and, when in season, fruits.
Voice
A dry, descending and accelerating trill.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Affinities somewhat uncertain. Anatomical and behavioural characters indicate that it is closely related to Phaeomyias.
