Highland cloud-forest, borders and clearings From 1,200 - 1,800 m.

Highlands of eastern Chiriquí and Veraguas, in west-central Panama.

Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation due to clearance for coffee plantations, cattle-grazing, overuse of pesticides and fires, are the main threats.

Voice
High pitch squeaky chattering and 'tsweet tsweet' calls.
Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Atlapetes. Sometimes considered conspecific with Yellow-thighed Finch (Pselliophorus tibialis).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Sooty-faced Finch (Arremon crassirostris) is more olive, lacks yellow thighs, black head and wings and has white moustache.
