Subspecies
In Perijá Mts (north-eastern Colombia-north-western Venezuela border) there may be an undescribed taxon that is related to nominate subspecies, intergrading with it in Norte de Santander. Further study is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
albofrenatus (Boissonneau, 1840) - Eastern Andes of Colombia from Norte de Santander south to Cundinamarca.
meridae (P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1871) - Andes of Mérida and eastern Táchira, in western Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Merida Brush-finch (Atlapetes meridae).
