Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010).

Status NT
Forest destruction owing to agricultural expansion and logging operations is probably the main threat.

Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Indian Scops-Owl (Otus bakkamoena), Collared Scops-Owl (Otus lettia), Sunda Scops-Owl (Otus lempiji), Japanese Scops-Owl (Otus semitorques), Palawan Scops-Owl (Otus fuliginosus) and Luzon Lowland Scops-Owl (Otus megalotis). Has sometimes been treated as conspecific with Indian Scops-Owl (Otus bakkamoena), Sunda Scops-Owl (Otus lempiji), Oriental Scops-Owl (Otus sunia) or Sulawesi Scops-Owl (Otus manadensis), but vocalizations distinct.

No subspecies.
