Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic data indicate that this genus may be unrelated (or, at least, not closely related) to any other in present family. Affiliations uncertain, and no closely related family or sister-taxon yet identified.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
costaricensis Todd, 1922 - Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica (from Heredia) south to extreme north-western Panama (vicinity of Almirante Bay).
cassinii (Lawrence, 1861) - Caribbean lowlands of western Panama (from Veraguas and Chiriquí Lagoon east to eastern Darién, also locally on Pacific slope in Veraguas); and Colombia at northern end of western Andes (R Nechí) east to Serranía de San Lucas, southern on eastern slope of central range in Caldas (to Tasajos; La Victoria), and entire Pacific lowlands (from Chocó) south to western Ecuador (south to Guayas).
