Subspecies
Southern birds have on occasion been separated as subspecies patagonicus, but doubtfully valid.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
pallidus Eschscholtz, 1829 - Lowlands of south-western Ecuador and extreme north-western Peru.
cuneicauda (Peale, 1849) - Peruvian Desert.
bolivianus Lowe, 1921 - Altiplano from extreme southern Peru through northern Chile and western Bolivia to north-western Argentina (Jujuy).
rumicivorus Eschscholtz, 1829 - Patagonian steppe south to northern Tierra del Fuego; migrates to central Chile and plains of north-eastern Argentina and Uruguay.
