Habitat
Drying, fresh, brackish or salt swamps with cover of water ribbons. Samphire saltmarshes, saltfields, salt lakes, both coastal and inland.

Nest
An open structure, composed of coarse grasses, placed at the base of a tussock surrounded by water.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 6, usually 5; glossy, green-olive or brown-olive, blotched and spotted mainly at larger end with shades of red-brown and purple-brown and underlying lavender-grey, some marked all over with small red-brown spots; oval; about 31 x 23 mm. Incubation: by both sexes.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Baillon's Crake (Zapornia pusilla) which is slightly smaller, has barring on the undertail and lacks a reddish base to the bill.
