Subspecies
Isolated southern population castaneiceps has been proposed as possibly representing a distinct species.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- vanrossemi Moore, RT, 1932 - North-western Mexico in southern Sonora and northernmost Sinaloa, and adjacent south-western Chihuahua.
- mexicanus Swainson, 1827 - Sinaloa and Durango south to Guerrero, western Oaxaca and extreme western Veracruz.
- saturatus Nelson, 1897 - Eastern Oaxaca and Chiapas, and adjacent south-western Guatemala.
- castaneiceps Gould, 1855 - Interior Guatemala, mainly in Motagua Valley.
