Previously thought, on biogeographical grounds, to form a species pair with Grey-headed Mannikin (Lonchura caniceps). Recent study of mitochondrial phylogeny indicates closer relationship with White-headed Munia (Lonchura maja) and Pale-headed Munia (Lonchura pallida), the three being similar also in plumage.
