Subspecies
Old report of hybridization in captivity with Streaked Weaver (Ploceus manyar). Subspecies burmanicus intergrades with nominate in north-eastern Indian Subcontinent.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • philippinus (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Pakistan (mostly on Indus floodplain), most of India (except south-west), southern Nepal and Sri Lanka.
  • travancoreensis Ali & Whistler, 1936   -  South-western India (from Goa south to Kerala and Travancore).
  • burmanicus Ticehurst, 1932   -  North-eastern India (West Bengal, Assam), southern Bhutan, Bangladesh, northern Myanmar and extreme southern China (south-western Yunnan).
  • angelorum Deignan, 1956   -  Northern and central Thailand east to southern Laos.
  • infortunatus Hartert, 1902   -  Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim), western and southern Thailand, southern Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Nias I, and (apparently almost extinct) Java and Bali.
