Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Snowy-throated Babbler (Stachyris oglei) or possibly to be conspecific. Geographical variation slight, despite number of subspecies named. Birds of this species observed in northern Myanmar have not been identified to level of subspecies. Species name often spelt "striolata", but there are no grounds for this emendation.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • helenae Delacour & Greenway, 1939   -  North-western Thailand and adjacent northern Laos.
  • tonkinensis Kinnear, 1938   -  Southern China (southern Yunnan east to Yao Shan, in Guangxi), northern and central Laos and Vietnam (Tonkin, northern and central Annam).
  • swinhoei Rothschild, 1903   -  Hainan I.
  • guttata (Blyth, 1859)   -  Southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
  • nigrescentior Deignan, 1947   -  Southern Thailand.
  • umbrosa (Kloss, 1921)   -  Northern Sumatra.
  • strialata (Müller, 1835)   -  Southern Sumatra.
