Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Geographical variation poorly defined, and characters separating most of the subspecies very weak. A revision is probably needed. Populations in northern Thailand, southern Laos and central Vietnam (central Annam) not yet assigned to subspecies.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • chrysaea (Blyth, 1844)   -  Central Nepal east to Bhutan, north-eastern Indian hill states (except eastern Mizoram), northern and north-eastern Myanmar and adjacent southern China (south-eastern Xizang, north-western and western Yunnan).
  • binghami (Rippon, 1904)   -  Eastern Mizoram (north-eastern India) and western Myanmar.
  • aurata (Meyer de Schauensee, 1938)   -  Extreme eastern Myanmar, north-western Thailand (south to Chiang Dao), northern and central Laos, northern Vietnam (Tonkin, northern Annam) and southern China (southern Yunnan east to south-western Guangxi).
  • assimilis (Walden, 1875)   -  South-eastern Myanmar (including Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
  • chrysops (Richmond, 1902)   -  Southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
  • frigida (Hartlaub, 1865)   -  Highlands of western Sumatra.
