Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction through overgrazing by introduced rusa deer Cervus timorensis, and clearance and drainage for agriculture are the main threats.

Voice
A variety of harsh calls, notably repeated quiet whistled 'zeee'. Also a sweet chirping song.

Similar Species
Tawny Grassbird (Cincloramphus timoriensis) which has a longer, spiky tail and duller underparts and supercilium. Note also that the female White-shouldered Fairywren (Malurus alboscapulatus) which is darker, lacks the rufous and has different habits.
