Habitat
Subtropical and tropical seasonally wet / flooded grassland, marshes, swamps. Also, rural gardens, arable land, irrigated land.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines (B), Russia (Asian) (B), Thailand, Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Singly or in pairs. Often sings loudly from a conspicuous perch.

Food
Small invertebrates.

Voice
Song is a rich bubbling 'pit pit pit pri pri pwee-pwee-pwee', the first notes softer. Also a variety of shorter and longer phrases.

Subspecies
Described subspecies andrewsi (from Myanmar-China border) treated as synonym of toklao.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • palustris Horsfield, 1821   -  Java and Bali.
  • toklao (Blyth, 1843)   -  North-eastern Pakistan (eastern Punjab) east across northern India and southern Nepal to north-eastern India (Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, southern Arunachal Pradesh), Myanmar, southern China (Yunnan, southern Guizhou, Guangxi), south-eastern Thailand, Cambodia, northern Laos and northern, central and southern Vietnam.
  • forbesi Bangs, 1919   -  Philippines and north-eastern Borneo (Sabah).
