Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut-crowned Warbler (Phylloscopus castaniceps) and Yellow-breasted Warbler (Phylloscopus montis), although overlaps in range with both to limited extent.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

sumatrensis (Robinson & Kloss, 1916) - Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sumatran Warbler (Phylloscopus sumatrensis).
grammiceps (Strickland, 1849) - Java and Bali.
