Proposed subspecies ottomeyeri (described from Nauna I, in Admiralty Is) is merged with eichhorni, and aignani (Misima, in Louisiade Archipelago) is synonymized with nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
eichhorni Hartert, 1926 - Nauna (eastern Admiralty Is); Nissan (Green Is), east of Bismarcks; and islands of Vitiaz Strait (Crown, Long, Tolokiwa), between New Britain and New Guinea.
longirostris Ramsay, EP, 1879 - Rogeia I (Heath I), in Milne Bay (off extreme south-eastern tip of New Guinea); Bonvouloir Group (East I and Hastings I), in western Louisiade Archipelago; and Alcester I (between Woodlark I and Louisiades).
griseotinctus Gray, 1858 - West-central and central Louisiade Archipelago in Conflict Group (Panasesa Is), Kimuta, Deboyne Group (Panepompom Is), Renard Is and Misima.
pallidipes De Vis, 1890 - Rossel, in eastern Louisiade Archipelago.
