Subspecies
Montane sibling of Oriental White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus). Despite enormous number of proposed names and the isolation of many populations, hardly any constant geographical variation exists. Some authors prefer to recognize only two subspecies (nominate and obstinatus) in Wallacea, and some even include most or all of Sumatran, Javan and Philippine subspecies in nominate. Subspecies pectoralis seems to represent a population in transition from pale-bellied to yellow-bellied, but sufficiently homogeneous to justify own name. Birds of this species recorded on Panay (west-central Philippines) may represent an as yet unnamed subspecies. Some differentiation exists among the various populations of nominate. Further study is required.
Birds of this species in Sula Archipelago of uncertain racial identity, provisionally included in nominate. Birds from Marinduque (north-central Philippines) described as subspecies gilli and formerly placed with present species, but now regarded as synonym of nominate subspecies of Lowland White-eye (Zosterops meyeni). Otherwise, proposed Moluccan subspecies seranensis (described from Mt Pinaia, on Seram) and ternatanus (Ternate) both synonymized with obstinatus; sarasinorum (Mt Klabat, in north-eastern Sulawesi), oriochares (Latimojong Mts, in south-central Sulawesi), origenes (Wawa Karaeng, in southern Sulawesi), foghaensis (Mt Madang, on Buru), korinchi (Mt Kerinci, in Sumatra), sindorensis (Mt Tjerima, in western Java), minimus (Mt Papandayan, in western Java), neglectus (near Tosari, in eastern Java), florensis (Geli Mutu, on Flores) and steini (Mt Ramelan, in eastern Timor) all subsumed in nominate; and, in Philippines, finitimus (Mt Cuernos de Negros, in southern Negros) merged with pectoralis.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
- whiteheadi Bonaparte, 1850 - Highlands of northern Luzon, in northern Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- halconensis Mearns, 1907 - Mindoro (north-central Philippines). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- parkesi duPont, 1971 - Mountains of Palawan, in western Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- pectoralis Mayr, 1945 - Negros (Canlaon Volcano, Cuernos de Negros), in west-central Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- diuatae Salomonsen, 1953 - Northern and north-western Mindanao (Diuata Mts, Mt Malindang, Civolig, Daggayan, Misamis Oriental), in southern Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- vulcani E. J. O. Hartert, 1903 - Central Mindanao (Mt Kitanglad, Mt Apo). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- difficilis Robinson and Kloss, 1918 - Mt Dempo, in southern Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- montanus Bonaparte, 1850 - Mountains in central Sumatra, Java (eastern from Mt Papandayan), Bali, Lesser Sundas (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Timor), Sulawesi (including Taliabu, in Sula Archipelago) and southern Moluccas (Buru). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- obstinatus E. J. O. Hartert, 1900 - Ternate and Bacan (off Halmahera) and Seram. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Japanese White-eye (Zosterops japonicus).
- gilli duPont, 1971 - Philippines (Marinduque).
