Subspecies
Nominate subspecies and khasiana differ markedly in breeding plumage from other subspecies, and are regarded by some authorities as representing a separate species. Also, these two subspecies, although separated only by the Brahmaputra Valley, differ quite strongly from each other in general coloration and also, seemingly, vocally, and they could possibly be treated as two full species. Further research is required.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • atrogularis (Moore, 1854)   -  Eastern Himalayas from eastern Nepal east to southern China (extreme southern Xizang) and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh).
  • khasiana (Godwin-Austen, 1876)   -  North-eastern India (from eastern Meghalaya and southern Assam east to south-western Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram) and western Myanmar (Chin Hills, Mt Victoria). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufous-crowned Prinia (Prinia khasiana).
  • superciliaris (Anderson, 1871)   -  North-eastern Myanmar, southern and south-eastern China (western Sichuan, and south-western Yunnan, northern Guangxi and northern Guangdong east to central Fujian), north-eastern Thailand, northern Laos and northern Vietnam (western and eastern Tonkin). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Hill Prinia (Prinia superciliaris).
  • erythropleura (Walden, 1875)   -  Eastern Myanmar and north-western Thailand. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hill Prinia (Prinia superciliaris).
  • klossi (Hachisuka, 1926)   -  Southern Laos (chiefly on Bolaven Plateau) and central Vietnam (central and southern Annam, northern Cochinchina). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hill Prinia (Prinia superciliaris).
  • waterstradti (E. J. O. Hartert, 1902)   -  Summit of Mt Tahan, in Peninsular Malaysia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hill Prinia (Prinia superciliaris).
  • dysancrita (Oberholser, 1912)   -  Western Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hill Prinia (Prinia superciliaris).
