Cup-shaped, composed of woven fibers, leaves and grass located low in a bush.
Eggs (Guide)
2; pinkish-white with purplish-brown spots and speckles and underlying greyish markings.
Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-browed Bulbul (Pycnonotus luteolus) and affinities to other members of genus remain to be clarified. Proposed subspecies personatus (Sumatra) considered indistinguishable from analis. Similarly, subspecies karimuniensis (Karimunjawa I, north of Java) merged with gourdini.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
jambu Deignan, 1955 - Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim southern from 12·5° north), central and southern Thailand, central Laos, southern Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
analis (Horsfield, 1821) - Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra (including Riau and Lingga Archipelagos, Bangka, Belitung), Java (including Kangean Is), Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa.
gourdini Gray, GR, 1847 - Borneo (including Maratua I, off eastern coast) and Karimunjawa I (north of Java).
goiavier (Scopoli, 1786) - Northern and central Philippines from Luzon, Polillo Is and Mindoro south, including most smaller islands, to Panay, Guimaras, Negros and Masbate.
suluensis Mearns, 1909 - Southern Philippines, from Dinagat, Nipa and Camiguin Sur south to Mindanao (including several offshire islets), Basilan and Sulu Archipelago (East Bolod and West Bolod south to Sanga Sanga and Bongao).
personatus Hume, 1873 - Malay Peninsula, Riau Arch., Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung is.
Similar Species
Flavescent Bulbul (Pycnonotus flavescens) which lacks the black lores.
