Subspecies
As the type material originates from central (not east) Java, the name barat is a junior synonym of the nominate and the name tenggerensis must therefore be restored for the eastern Java race.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

snouckaerti (Horsfield, 1821) - North-western Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Aceh Bulbul (Pycnonotus snouckaerti).
bimaculatus (Horsfield, 1821) - South-western Sumatra and western and central Java.
tenggerensis (van Oort, 1911) - Eastern Java.
