Subspecies
Birds in Sula Is (off eastern Sulawesi) provisionally included in nominate subspecies but may represent a previously undescribed subspecies.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

septentrionalis Parkes, 1960 - North-western Luzon (Benguet and Lepanto), in northern Philippines.
zimmeri Parkes, 1960 - Central and southern Luzon.
panayensis (Sharpe, 1877) - Western and central Philippines (Palawan, Panay, Negros, Cebu, Biliran, Leyte, Mindanao).
mayri Deignan, 1947 - South-western Sulu Archipelago (Tawi-Tawi and Bongao).
helianthea Wallace, 1865 - Sulawesi, Banggai Is, Sula Archipelago and Salayer I.
