Forest, including monsoon forest, favouring areas with closed-canopy forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m.
Indonesia (B), Timor-Leste (B) (NB).
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and fragmentation, trade, are the main threats.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
peronii (Vieillot, 1818) - Roti and western Timor.
audacis Hartert, 1899 - Timor Leste (eastern Timor), and Wetar and Romang east to Babar.
