Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • axillaris (Salvadori, 1876)   -  Western New Guinea (Vogelkop and western Snow Mts).
  • fallax (Ramsay, EP, 1885)   -  Mountains of north-central and eastern New Guinea and D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Goodenough I).
