Morphology, vocalizations and behaviour suggest close affinities to both Hypothymis and Terpsiphone. It has been suggested that it may be better merged with, especially, the latter of those two genera. No supporting molecular-genetic evidence.
Similar Species
Male Black-naped Monarch (Hypothymis azurea) is smaller with inconspicuous black patches on nape, forehead and breast.
