Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Brown Oriole (Oriolus szalayi), Dusky-brown Oriole (Oriolus phaeochromus), Grey-collared Oriole (Oriolus forsteni), Black-eared Oriole (Oriolus bouroensis) and Olive-backed Oriole (Oriolus sagittatus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- finschi Hartert, 1904 - Wetar I and Atauro I,
in Lesser Sundas. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Wetar Oriole (Oriolus finschi).
- melanotis Bonaparte, 1850 - Timor, Roti and Semau, in
Lesser Sundas.
