Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Pale-billed Sicklebill (Drepanornis bruijnii). Birds from Huon Peninsula sometimes recognized as subspecies geisleri. Further study is required.

Proposed subspecies inversus (described from Mt. Kunupi, in Weyland Mts) synonymized with cervinicauda.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • albertisi (Sclater, 1873)   -  Non-Cordilleran ranges of New Guinea, including mountains of Vogelkop, Wandammen Peninsula and Huon Peninsula, and presumably also Fakfak Mts, Kumawa Mts and Foja Mts.
  • cervinicauda Sclater, PL, 1884   -  Central Cordillera of New Guinea from Weyland Mts east, very patchily, to Lordberg and Tari area and mountains of south-eastern New Guinea.
  • geisleri Meyer, AB, 1893   -  North-eastern New Guinea.
