Subspecies
This genus and Loboparadisea sometimes united in a separate family, Cnemophilidae. Sympatric with Loria's Bird-of-paradise (Cnemophilus loriae) at about 2600 m on Mt Hagen and 2,200 - 2,650 m in Ambua Range, but hybridization unrecorded. Birds from Kubor Mts (eastern New Guinea) described as additional subspecies, kuboriensis, synonymized with sanguineus. Geographical extent of nominate subspecies uncertain, possibly wider than is listed below.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • sanguineus Iredale, 1948   -  Mountains of eastern New Guinea (Mt Giluwe and Mt Hagen region east to at least Bismarck Mts and Kubor Range). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Red Satinbird (Cnemophilus sanguineus).
  • macgregorii De Vis, 1890   -  South-eastern New Guinea (eastern at least from Ekuti Divide, east of Watut/Tauri gap).
