Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Rufous-sided Honeyeater (Ptiloprora erythropleura), Rufous-backed Honeyeater (Ptiloprora guisei) and Black-backed Honeyeater (Ptiloprora perstriata). May form a superspecies with Rufous-backed Honeyeater (Ptiloprora guisei).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- mayri Hartert, 1930 - Foja Mts and Cyclops Mts, in northern New Guinea.
- acrophila Diamond, 1969 - Summit of Mt Menawa (Bewani Mts), in northern New Guinea.
