Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, heavily degraded former forest.

Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies cinereifrons possibly better synonymized with nominate. Proposed subspecies simplex (from middle Sepik region, in northern New Guinea) considered inseparable from proximus.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • ixoides (Salvadori, 1878)   -  North-western New Guinea east to head of Geelvink Bay and, in south, to about Mimika R and including Weyland Mts.
  • proximus (Madarász, 1900)   -  Northern New Guinea from Mamberamo R east to Astrolabe Bay.
  • unicus Mayr, 1931   -  North-eastern New Guinea (Huon Peninsula and slopes of Herzog Mts).
  • cinereifrons Salomonsen, 1966   -  Southern New Guinea from Mimika R east to upper reaches of Fly R (absent from southern Trans-Fly), and apparently also to Port Moresby district.
  • finschi (Rothschild & Hartert, 1903)   -  South-eastern New Guinea on northern watershed of ranges from Kumusi R east to Milne Bay and on southern watershed east of Port Moresby (usually absent from southern coast).
  • simplex (Reichenow, 1915)   -  Northern New Guinea (Mamberamo River to middle Sepik River).
