Subspecies
Racial identity of apparently isolated populations of Gogol R, on north-eastern coast (Madang Province), and R Watut (Morobe Province), on north-western coast of south-eastern peninsula, not certain and tentatively placed in, respectively, nominate and fulviventris.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
griseigula (Schlegel, 1871) - North-western and northern New Guinea,
from Vogelkop and Bomberai Peninsula (including Kumawa Mts) eastern to
Humboldt Bay and extending to foothills of southern Weyland Mts, also
isolated population in R Gogol area (Madang Province).
fulviventris (Ramsay, EP, 1882) - South-eastern New Guinea on
lower R Watut (Morobe Province) and eastern from R Kumusi and, on southern coast,
from eastern Gulf Province.
