Subspecies
Relationships within genus uncertain. May be close to the Cardinal Myzomela (Myzomela cardinalis) superspecies or to the Red-capped Myzomela (Myzomela lafargei) superspecies.
Proposed subspecies wahgiensis (Weiga, southern slope Wahgi Divide, in Western Highlands) considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
rosenbergii Schlegel, 1871 - High mountains of New Guinea from Vogelkop east, including Bewani Mts (central North Coastal Ranges), Adelbert Mts and mountains of Huon Peninsula, to Owen Stanley Range.
longirostris Mayr & Rand, 1935 - Mountains of Goodenough I, in D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Long-billed Myzomela (Myzomela longirostris).
wahgiensis Gyldenstolpe, 1955 - Mts. of western and central New Guinea.
