Proposed subspecies wahgiensis (Weiga, southern slope Wahgi Divide, in Western Highlands) considered inseparable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • rosenbergii Schlegel, 1871   -  High mountains of New Guinea from Vogelkop east, including Bewani Mts (central North Coastal Ranges), Adelbert Mts and mountains of Huon Peninsula, to Owen Stanley Range.
  • longirostris Mayr & Rand, 1935   -  Mountains of Goodenough I, in D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Long-billed Myzomela (Myzomela longirostris).
  • wahgiensis Gyldenstolpe, 1955   -  Mts. of western and central New Guinea.
