Sumba Myzomela © aerien.ch

Forms a superspecies, and sometimes treated as conspecific, with Red-headed Myzomela (Myzomela erythrocephala) and Crimson-hooded Myzomela (Myzomela kuehni). All closely related to the Cardinal Myzomela (Myzomela cardinalis) superspecies.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Red-headed Myzomela (Myzomela erythrocephala).
