Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-throated Treecreeper (Cormobates leucophaea), and has in the past been treated as conspecific.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
placens (Sclater, 1874) - Vogelkop (Tamrau Mts, Arfak Mts), in north-western New Guinea.
steini (Mayr, 1936) - Western and central New Guinea from Weyland Mts eastern east through Hindenburg Range to Tari Gap area.
inexpectata (Rand, 1940) - Snow Mts, in west-central New Guinea.
meridionalis (Hartert, 1907) - Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea (eastern from Aseki area, Mt Kaindi and Herzog Mts).
