Subspecies
Subspecies rubropygius was formerly considered a separate species, as thought to be sympatric with nominate in two areas, but recent examination of critical specimens indicates that ranges do not overlap, although closely approaching each other in north-eastern Myanmar. Status of some isolated populations, particularly in south-eastern Thailand and Indochina, and the boundaries between and validity of several subspecies, are poorly understood and require further study; atrestus and aphobus often synonymized with elisabethae, while birds occurring in lowland southern Laos are considered probably to belong to atrestus, rather than to impavidus, which is better treated as confined to Bolaven Plateau. Described subspecies intrepidus (north-eastern Thailand) and moderatus (northern Sumatra) considered unacceptable.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
rubropygius (Hodgson, 1839) - North-eastern India, Bhutan and eastern Bangladesh east to western and north-eastern Myanmar (Arakan, Chin Hills and Upper Chindwin east to R Irrawaddy). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-browed Broadbill (Serilophus rubropygius).
atrestus Deignan, 1948 - Central and eastern Myanmar (south of Bhamo, east of R Irrawaddy) and southern China (south-western Yunnan) south to north-eastern Thailand, central and southern (lowland) Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
elisabethae La Touche, 1921 - South-eastern China (south-eastern Yunnan, south-western Guangxi) and eastern Tonkin.
polionotus Rothschild, 1903 - Hainan I.
lunatus (Gould, 1834) - South-central and southern Myanmar (Pegu Yomas, Karen Hills, northern Tenasserim) and north-western Thailand.
stolidus Robinson & Kloss, 1919 - Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and south-western and southern Thailand (except extreme south).
aphobus Deignan, 1948 - South-eastern Thailand and Cambodia.
impavidus Deignan, 1948 - Bolaven Plateau, in southern Laos.
rothschildi Hartert & Butler, AL, 1898 - Extreme southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
