Habitat
Floor and undergrowth of hill dipterocarp and lower montane rainforest, frequenting dark, damp areas, in particular ravines under dense cover. From 400 m - 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B).

Highlands of Sumatra.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2020) and decreasing.

Status VU
Forest loss, degradation and fragmentation are the main threats.

Voice
Long, mournful whistle, lower-pitched than that of Garnet Pitta (Erythropitta granatina), usually on an even pitch, sometimes inflected upwards.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Garnet Pitta (Erythropitta granatina) and has been considered conspecific, but differs in structural and plumage characters, in altitudinal preference, and in vocalizations. Alternatively, only subspecies ussheri of Garnet Pitta (Erythropitta granatina) has been included as a subspecies of present species on account of head coloration, but other plumage features and also tail length differ considerably.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Garnet Pitta (Erythropitta granatina) which has bright crimson rear crown and nape.
