Habitat
Floor and undergrowth of primary and selectively logged, tropical and subtropical lower and upper montane rainforest. From 900 - 2,400 m.

Range (Guide)

Indonesia (B).

Highlands of Sumatra.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging and conversion to agriculture, and susceptibility to hunting are the main threats.

A low, rather soft, drawn out, double whistle, rising on the first note and falling on the second.

Subspecies
Closely related to Giant Pitta (Hydrornis caeruleus) and Blue Pitta (Hydrornis cyaneus). May also share some affinities with Hydrornis group.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Giant Pitta (Hydrornis caeruleus) is larger with more massive bill, colder brown on head and black on crown.
