Bangladesh (NB), Cambodia (B), India (B), Laos (E), Myanmar (E), Nepal (NB), Pakistan (E), Thailand (NB), Vietnam (NB).

Wetlands, seasonally inundated forest, carcass dumps, tall wet grassland, mangroves and intertidal flats.

Population
Estimated population is 800 - 1,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction, including some felling of nest-trees, and drainage, conversion, pollution and over-exploitation of wetlands, and direct exploitation are the main threats.

Subspecies
Formerly considered to include Marabou (Leptoptilos crumenifer), with which forms superspecies.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Lesser Adjutant (Leptoptilos javanicus) which is smaller, lacks neck pouch, has black greater coverts and tertials.
